Kindness an Elixir of Life

Kindness always has been propagated in religious scriptures, teachings and in literature for our well-being. Almost every religion talks about kindness, as in how it relieves suffering and is interlinked with faith. In Thirukkural an ancient book of wisdom written 2000 years ago mentions kindness as the richest of all riches.

According to science kindness has been known to increase energy, self-esteem, happiness, pleasure and make one live longer. Kindness is also found to decrease negativity, depression, anxiety, stress and blood pressure.

Researches have found that kindness increases the levels of three important hormones - dopamine, serotonin and endorphins

Dopamine is a pleasure hormone which in the right quantity will improve your memory, fights against depression and makes you feel more alive.

Serotonin is a feel-good hormone that improves one’s mood and brings about happiness. It fights anxiety and depression. It is a hormone that helps with the longevity of life.

Endorphin is a happy hormone that acts as a natural pain killer as well.

On performing acts of kindness especially random acts of kindness, these hormones will be released in our body which would greatly benefit our mental health and our physical health.

How can we practice Kindness?

  • First we should be kind to ourselves, by practicing gratitude. Please go through my other blog on the benefits of gratitude

  • Be kind to those who love and care for you by not taking them for granted.

  • Perform random acts of kindness as much as possible. Just a smile could be an act of kindness when given at the right moment.

It is possible to be kind whenever possible.

Finally, I would like to close for now by stating "Kindness can change the impossible to possible".
