Is it okay to make fun at other's expense? Based on the Oscar slap episode

Regarding the slap of the year episode at the academy awards on the altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock, what I observe is a major shift in the way we perceive things along with a lack of empathy and values. Yes, abusing a person verbally or physically is wrong, however, bullying another and instigating them is equally wrong. Bullying is also making fun at the expense of another person. Sadly, neither Chris Rock nor Will Smith is entirely responsible for this, it is the current trend of “Roasting” and making comedy at the expense of others that is responsible. We are a party to it as we have been enjoying it. It also seems to be normalized in today’s media frenzy world. It is expected that the person who is roasted or made fun of has to take it in the right spirit. Not everyone can act that way or built with that kind of resilience. Unfortunately, we live in a world where whatever celebrities do, it is considered a trend and the younger generation tends to follow the suit.

We need to think about what we are indirectly teaching our younger generation - that it is fun or comedy to bully or make fun of others? We should be aware that bullying is a serious issue with the younger generation, being a counselor, I see many (especially the younger generation) being affected by bullying. Some may quote that it is just for fun or it would help build resilience, however in reality negative effects are even more. Also, it does not justify or give the right to hurt others.

There is no principle or value in any philosophy or religion that states that it is okay to be unkind or cruel to others or it is okay to make fun at the expense of others. You have the right to make fun of yourself but not of others. Have we changed so much that being polite or being kind or empathetic is becoming something of low or no value? Now, with the trend of abuse at school, on social media and the increase in the rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies it is necessary to think of values and virtues such as being kind, polite, empathetic and being nice. Otherwise, we would be witness more mental health problems and more violent altercations in the future.

Note: This is purely my thoughts and viewpoint.
